As an international student, it’s important to understand the employment regulations tied to your visa status. Work authorization options include CPT, OPT, STEM Extension, and H-1B sponsorship, each with its own rules, application process, and timeline. While some authorizations, such as CPT, can be processed quickly with the support of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), others, like OPT or H-1B, require approval from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and may take several months. ISSS does not approve work authorizations but provides guidance, documentation (such as the I-20), and assistance needed to apply for work authorization through USCIS.
To know more about work authorizations visit ISSS page.
Also, Check USCIS website for more details for work authorization applications.
Not every employer is able to hire international candidates, so it’s important to focus your job search on those who actively recruit global talent. Tools like Handshake and MyVisaJobs can help you find companies that accept CPT/OPT or sponsor H-1B visas. Networking with alumni who were international students is also a great way to uncover opportunities and insider advice. You can build your professional network by attending events hosted by international student clubs and by connecting with professionals on LinkedIn.
A strong, US style resume is your first step to making a great impression. Highlight both your hard and soft skills, and show how your academic background, projects, and work experience connect to the role you’re targeting. Include measurable results where possible, and tailor each resume to the job description. Consider emphasizing transferable skills gained through coursework, research, or student organizations.

Interviewing in a new cultural context can be challenging. Practice answering both technical and behavioral questions using the STAR method, and prepare clear, professional responses if asked about your work authorization. Understanding U.S. workplace expectations will help you build rapport and present yourself confidently.
