Position and Department Description

Highly motivated Research Assistant needed to contribute to the research portfolio of The Dr. Richard Young faculty fellowship. The ideal candidate will assist in data analysis, researching news and social media, identifying donor opportunities, assisting with database management, assisting with event coordination, and working on communications processes using the lab website. Time commitment is 6-10 hours per week for 30 weeks throughout AY 26-27.

Job Functions and Duties

  • Collaborate with the Dr. Richard D. Young Research lab to work on research projects, and programs for development related to law, immigration, gender, gun policy, women’s health care policy, climate change, and other areas of public policy.
  • Contribute to social media sites for lab.
  • Assist with donor relations, outreach, and maintenance of networking record.
  • Stay up to date with current political science literature and developments.
  • Provide administrative support to research projects and social events as needed.
  • Responsible for safe and productive environment.
  • Attends designated class(es) regularly to assist in class and facilitate an engaged classroom; monitors class
  • Participation and maintains accurate attendance records; submits attendance records as required.
  • Attend weekly group meetings; responds/provides feedback appropriately.
  • Under general supervision of staff or faculty member, develops study/review sessions that are relevant, on-point, and tailored to meet the needs of the students.
  • Identifies and suggests to staff or faculty member ways for students to improve academic readiness, as well as identifies and addresses academic barriers, challenges, and concerns.
  • Under general supervision, develops content and materials for academic support workshops for students.
  • Emailing or engaging otherwise with motivated students who demonstrate interest in working with the lab.
  • Complete tasks related to the development of the lab, such as updating the website, coordinating events, and working on research projects.
  • May represent the university in outreach activities.
  • Attends meetings, professional development mentoring and training as required.
  • Creates inclusive learning spaces for diverse learners inside and outside the classroom.
  • Coordinates and implements assigned projects.
  • Communicates with staff or faculty in content area to stay current on subject material.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be an active NAU student (i.e. enrolled in classes and degree- or certification-seeking)
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, Zotero, Overleaf/Latex, WordPress, and Canva.
  • CITI Certification in Basic Course and Responsible Conduct of Research.
  • Willing to learn R/RStudio and Stata statistical software.
  • Passion for social science research, civic organizing, and a demonstrated commitment to academic excellence.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • STA 270 Applied Statistics.

Compensation

$16.25 hour

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
