JOB TITLE: Senior Power Systems Engineer – Studies & Protection
COMPANY: Sigma C Power Services
LOCATION: Remote (U.S.) – Massachusetts / Greater Boston strongly preferred
JOB TYPE: Full-time
TRAVEL: Occasional (typically 10-20%) for site walkdowns, commissioning support, and client meetings
COMPENSATION: $140,000 – $155,000 base, depending on experience and P.E. status, plus bonus and benefits
ABOUT THE ROLE
Sigma C Power Services is looking for a Senior Power Systems Engineer to own the technical
delivery of power system studies and protective system upgrades for industrial, commercial,
utility, and renewable-generation clients. This is a senior, review-level position: you will
not only produce studies, you will be the person who checks other engineers’ work, signs off
on deliverables, and represents the engineering position in front of clients, AHJs, and
utility reviewers.
You will work alongside a NETA-accredited field testing organization, which means your models
get validated against real field data and your relay settings get loaded, tested, and proven
in the field. If you want your engineering to be closed-loop rather than theoretical, this is
that job.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
– Perform and review power system studies: short circuit, protective device coordination,
arc flash / incident energy (IEEE 1584, NFPA 70E), load flow, motor starting, grounding,
and power quality / harmonic analysis.
– Serve as the senior technical reviewer and approver for studies produced by other engineers
and designers; enforce modeling assumptions, data quality, and report consistency.
– Build and maintain system models in ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or EasyPower, including data
collection plans and one-line development from field walkdowns and record drawings.
– Design and execute protective system upgrades: relay selection, retrofit scope development,
settings calculations, and settings files for SEL, GE / Multilin, Basler, ABB, Schweitzer,
Beckwith, and legacy electromechanical replacements.
– Develop and review relay setting sheets, logic, communications and SCADA points lists, and
coordination curves; support factory acceptance and site acceptance testing.
– Review field testing and commissioning data for medium and high voltage apparatus:
power transformers, MV/HV circuit breakers, switchgear, MV cable diagnostics (VLF, tan
delta, partial discharge), CTs and PTs, protective relays, grounding systems, and
insulating fluids / SF6 analysis.
– Interpret test results against manufacturer instruction leaflets, NETA ATS/MTS acceptance
criteria, and applicable standards; issue findings, root-cause opinions, and corrective
recommendations.
– Write and stamp (or route for stamping) engineering reports, arc flash label schedules,
incident energy tables, and equipment labeling packages.
– Support proposal development and scoping: estimate study effort, define data requirements,
and set realistic schedules.
– Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and field technicians; help build repeatable internal
standards, templates, and QA checklists.
– Interface directly with clients, plant electrical staff, utilities, and OEMs as the
technical authority on assigned projects.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
– Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (ABET-accredited program).
– 8+ years of power systems engineering experience, with a substantial portion in studies
and/or protection and controls.
– Demonstrated ability to independently produce AND review short circuit, coordination, and
arc flash studies without supervision.
– Hands-on proficiency with at least one industry-standard modeling platform: ETAP,
SKM PowerTools, or EasyPower.
– Practical experience configuring and applying microprocessor protective relays
(SEL, GE, Basler, ABB, or equivalent), including writing settings files.
– Working knowledge of NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584, IEEE 242 (Buff Book), NEC / NFPA 70,
ANSI/IEEE C37 series, and NETA ATS/MTS.
– Ability to read and interpret one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams,
and relay logic.
– Strong technical writing skills; your reports go to clients and are expected to stand on
their own.
– Comfortable working remotely with high autonomy and clear communication.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
– Professional Engineer (P.E.) license – strongly preferred, with Massachusetts licensure or
willingness to obtain it and pursue additional state licensure via comity.
– Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a power systems concentration.
– Field testing or commissioning background (NETA Level III/IV experience or equivalent).
– Experience with transmission-level and interconnection studies (ASPEN OneLiner, PSS/E,
PSCAD, CYME) in addition to industrial distribution studies.
– Experience with renewable and BESS interconnection protection requirements.
– NERC compliance exposure (PRC standards, MOD-025 / MOD-026 generator testing).
– Familiarity with utility protection standards and coordination with utility relay groups.
– Located in Massachusetts, New England, or the Northeast.
WHY THIS ROLE
– Senior authority from day one – you own the technical position, not just the deliverable.
– Closed-loop engineering: your models and settings are validated by an in-house NETA field
services team.
– Remote-first flexibility with a preference for candidates who can reach New England sites.
– Direct path to a technical leadership / engineering manager track as the studies group grows.
– Company-supported P.E. licensure, exam fees, continuing education, and NETA/IEEE
involvement.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Base salary range: $140,000 – $155,000, commensurate with experience, P.E. status, and
depth of protection and studies review capability. Total compensation includes performance
bonus, medical / dental / vision, 401(k) with company match, paid time off, professional
license and continuing education reimbursement, and reimbursed travel expenses.
HOW TO APPLY
Apply through Handshake with your resume and, if available, a redacted example of a study
report or relay settings package you authored or reviewed. Candidates who can speak
specifically to coordination decisions and arc flash mitigation strategies they personally
made will move fastest.
