Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (oSTEM) is a national society dedicated to educating and fostering leadership for LGBTQIA communities in the STEM fields.
As an organization dedicated to community, our work starts with our mission. It serves as a touchstone and reminds us of our common goals:
- To educate, empower, and engage a diverse community,
- To identify, address, and advocate for the needs of LGBTQIA students in the STEM fields,
- To fulfill these needs through mentorship connections, networking opportunities, strategic collaborations, and professional/leadership development.
As members of oSTEM, we believe that maintaining a supportive community is crucial to the success and enrichment of both ourselves and our peers. LGBTQ+ students often experience adversity due to their identity, and especially in challenging fields such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, this can become overwhelming and isolating. Because of this, we strive to connect with and support LGBTQ+ students in STEM, upholding our values of community and inclusion, and to contribute to mitigating the challenges faced by underrepresented individuals with gender/sexual identities in STEM.
